Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers completed a study that concluded untreated sleep apnea can result with a range of conditions associated with diabetes and heart disease. The study found shows increases in blood sugar, stress hormones, fat levels, and blood pressure in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that affects 20% to 30% of adults.

This recently published study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, may help to refine the scientific debate over whether sleep apnea is a manifestation of obesity, or in fact an active contributor to associated health problems like heart disease and diabetes.

For patients with a hard time tolerating CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), researchers recommend working with sleep specialists who can assist with the machine or recommend alternative therapies.
